Arabian horses in Arabia

We went on a full days ride on two chestnut Arabian mares exploring the area around Petra. From big plains, narrow Siqs and high up in the mountains. Lovely soft horses, full of energy and spirit and fast as the desert wind.

In a narrow Siq.

In a very narrow Siq, we will almost have to back out.

Check out the cool Arabian tack.

Ulrica and Abdul riding out from the Siq

She is still keeping all hoofs on the ground. Sort of......

An area with pretty pink desert flowers. This is just after we had tea and grilled goat with a Beduin family celebrating Friday. They invited us to share their food and Abdul, our guide, let us politely and quietly understand that it would be unthinkably rude to decline the hospitality. And yes, western women are treated like men under these circumstances so Ulrica got to sit with the men rather than with the women by the cooking fire.

On a mountain plateau looking out over a great Wadi.

The horses enjoying the lunch break very much. They very obviously enjoyed the entire day, from the point when they came racing to meet us at the gate in the morning all tacked up and extremely eager to get out for the day.

A lot of riding over bedrock.

We are right up on a high plateau in the mountains and Abdul is trying to find a trail down to the valley floor down below.

Jordan_080506_016
Abdul, our guide, enjoyed our camera very much and snapped pictures en mass.

Jordan_080506_017
We will try to get down here. It looks like a goat trail that might take us all the way down to the valley below.

Jordan_080506_018
It really is very steep. Just look at Abdul in the lead.

Bordering on rock climbing with a horse.

Jordan_080506_020
Ulrica seem to have more problems than Leila and she does not even have slippery iron shoes.

Jordan_080506_021

Jordan_080506_022
We did not think horses would be ok on rock like this but Arabian horses really are sure footed.

Jordan_080506_023

Jordan_080506_024
Ulrica need a break but Leila seem pretty unfazed.

Jordan_080506_026
A big sand plain and an honest attempt to run the horses tired. They compete in endurance racing so we should have figured it was fruitless.

Jordan_080506_027
A bit sweaty? Yes! Tired? NO!

Jordan_080506_028
But she seemed pretty happy to have released some of the energy. She did spend considerable time standing on two legs during the day but after all this racing she seemed a bit happier just walking alongside her older sister and behaving like a good girl.

Jordan_080506_029
Right... where am I going?

Jordan_080506_030
Full speed!

Jordan_080506_034

Jordan_080506_031
Magnus looking really competent. And his wife is really proud.

Jordan_080506_032
What a scenic landscape to ride in.

Beautiful chestnut sisters at the end of an unforgettable day.
